An itinerary constellated with unforgettable experiences
The memory of the Great War is tangible in these mountains; it consists of a fabric of forms and works that are still extraordinarily readable (forts, trenches, emplacements, former military cemeteries) which constitute a code for the interpretation of these events in Italian history once they have been discovered and appreciated.
The Alta Via high altitude Great War hiking trail is for those who wish to live the experience of the mountains to the full. You will be able to hear the sounds of the wood and walk among the places of remembrance; you will be guided by the explanations in the ecomuseums and the forts and museums that you will find along the trail will be your companions.
You will live the experience of a journey in memory; or, perhaps, above all, an interior journey in a great open-air museum.

Along the Alta Via trail, you will find a series of tables, reconstructions, notice boards and views that will be at your side, describing to you the most important events that occurred in these war zones.
These itineraries have also been considered in the Great War Ecomuseum project, a vast museum of Great War sites, whose aim is to allow people to see and come to know them.
EXPERIENCES
MUSEUMS AND FORTS
As you go along the Alta Via high altitude Great War hiking trail, you will be able to visit a number of museums devoted to the First World War; they offer you a plunge into life on the front line and majestic forts, works of military architecture designed as defensive works or as camps.
